Very true, a minority have purchased a vanity item and the figure of 140,000 is based on 1 weeks sales which will increase over time. I expect demand will drop off fairly quickly thereafter, but a total sale of 250,000 does not seem out of the question.
If that's for a vanity item how many people would pay for something thay can actually use in game?
Yup, my last line makes it look like I'm suggesting 140,000 is a majority. That's not what I meant. Just that I may be in a minority of people who wouldn't buy anything be it vanity pet or in-game useful item. Not out of some form of moral position, I'm just too damned mean!
In the end its not really about what percenatge of player base do this or do that. It's about the revenue and profit. Even on current sales figures and allowing for taxes and R&D costs, the two items for sale just now must have added a cool $2m straight onto the bottom line and that figure is just too big for Blizzard to ignore as an ongoing revenue stream. They have also created the pay-for-item precedent without any major grief from the player base and that's got to be worth far more in the long run.

140,000 is very far from a majority of people. If we assume 3 million accounts which is less than blizzard claim then it's a little over 4% of players bought one.

Wow seems to be going the reverse direction. Anything that slows down gameplay or "progress" is steadily being eliminated from the game. Everything is about streamlining the experience rather than adding flavour. I don't like it one bit!

Sounds like a great blog idea. I could contribute to that one. Believe it not, I retain officer access in a very succesful raiding guild and I help them out with aspects of communication - oh the irony! I just don't happen to play there anymore. A very nice bunch, even if they are Alliance and allow in gnomes.
